Labiaplasty

Women worry about the size and shape of their genitals (labia or 'lips'). They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, which is absolutely normal.

Unfortunately, the internet shows many pictures which are after surgery or airbrushed but passed off as 'natural' or 'normal', which they aren't.

Widely available pornography containing selective or digitally altered images, together with limited exposure to women or other women’s genitals, gives a false impression of what is normal. If this isn't understood, women (and men) criticise normal genitals; for many women this causes a great deal of psychological distress.

The answer isn't surgery which is costly (the NHS will not pay) and may result in disfigurement, scaring and chronic pain. Healthcare professionals in particular should make explicit the lack of evidence supporting the claimed psychological, functional or relationship benefits of surgery (labiaplasty) and the implications of a treatment that involves the removal of tissue that is important to sexual function and arousal.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommend women requesting labiaplasty should be provided with accurate information about the normal variations in female genitalia and offered counselling and other psychological treatments for problems such as body image distress. Education, support and advice should be at the heart of clinical practice, with a sympathetic appreciation of female body insecurities.
